August 20 - 17 Year Old Shot and Killed By 62 Year Old Over Cell Phone
Chapin shooting: Violent night began with an accusation
Deshaun Clark apparently was shot and killed over a “missing” cell phone that wasn’t really missing. The phone belonged to 19-year-old Janice Reeves who with her twin brother Francis “Frank” Marion Reeves IV was hosting a party at a lakefront Chapin home where Clark was shot Friday night, authorities said Tuesday. Reeves’ father, Francis Marion Reeves III, 62, has been charged with murder in Clark’s death. He was released Tuesday afternoon on $125,000 bond. In court Tuesday, Deputy 11th Circuit Solicitor Rick Hubbard said Janice Reeves’ boyfriend, who was not named, accused Clark of taking the phone. A fight broke out and Clark, 17, was knocked unconscious twice, Hubbard said. Clark left with friends, but said he would be back with more people. Frank Reeves and a friend made the short drive 600 yards to the senior Reeves’ home on Dreher Island Road. “The defendant doesn’t call 911, rather he hands his son a shotgun, not loaded, and takes a pistol for himself,” Hubbard said. When they returned to the lake house on Lexington Lane, Clark had come back with three carloads of people, Hubbard said. Three people attacked Reeves’ son, but according to witnesses’ statements, Reeves shot not at the people attacking his son, but at Clark, who was standing nearby. The teens scattered at the sound of gunfire. “I think I shot someone in the leg,” Reeves told his children, Hubbard said. Clark’s friends drove him to the Chapin Fire Station and EMS workers took him to the hospital. He died about 5:30 a.m. Saturday. He had been shot once in the abdomen. A friend of Clark, Breon Jacoby Mayers, 17, of Little Mountain, remains in jail, accused of firing shots in retaliation about 11:30 p.m. Friday outside Reeves’ Dreher Island Road home. Two 16-year-old Chapin boys who were riding in a car with Mayers at the time of the drive-by shooting were injured when Reeves allegedly returned fire at their car. Reeves is not charged in that incident, though an investigation is continuing. And the phone? Much later, Janice Reeves discovered the phone had been in her back pocket the whole time, Hubbard said. SELF-DEFENSE? d*ck Harpootlian, who is representing Reeves, said his client thought his children were in danger and had been told his daughter had been knocked out. “Mr. Reeves believes in his heart that he was acting in self-defense,” Harpootlian said. Janice Reeves, who sobbed at times during Tuesday’s hearing, appeared to have a slight bruise under one eye. Lexington County Sheriff’s Department spokesman John Allard said they had not received any reports that she had been assaulted. Hubbard said the senior Reeves was hostile to police who tried to speak with him Friday night and continues to be hostile. In setting bond, McMahan noted Reeves did not have a criminal record and did not appear to be a flight risk. McMahan ordered Reeves not to have contact with Clark’s family or any witnesses to the shooting. Reeves will be under house arrest and only permitted to go to court, meetings with his attorney, doctor’s appointments and church. He is not to have alcohol. TWO FAMILIES REELING More than two dozen of Clark’s family members filled three rows of seats in the courtroom. They let out a collective murmur when Hubbard said the cell phone that had started the incident had simply been misplaced. Clark’s uncle, Corinthea Stack, asked Circuit Judge Knox McMahan to deny Reeves bond. “We believe he made an irrational decision to go to a place where children were having what we thought was a back-to-school party,” Stack told the court. “There is a foul stench in the air in Chapin,” Chapin resident and family friend Jesse Blocker said. “This is definitely a tragedy.” Across the aisle, Reeves’ family was suffering as well. Reeves’ wife Sandra J. Threatt, an administrator with the Department of Health and Environmental Control, said the two days her husband spent in jail were the longest they had been separated in 28 years of marriage. “He’s always protected me,” she said. “I know what he did was to protect our family. I would like very much to have him home.” The senior Reeves retired as an administrator from the University of South Carolina’s Geology department. “He is retired,” Harpootlian said. “He is not a man of means. They don’t have an awful lot.” Stack, a pastor of Bethany AME Church in Jonesville, said the Clark family is encouraging young people not to act in anger and to let law enforcement and the solicitor’s office do their jobs. “God commands us to love,” Stack said. “I don’t have any harsh feelings toward (Reeves). I hate the action. I hate how it ended.” http://www.thestate.com/local/story/495755.html
